What an email permutator does
An email permutator generates every common email address format for a person from their name and company domain, such as jane.doe@, jdoe@ and jane@. Usually only one permutation is a live mailbox, so verify before sending to protect your sender reputation, or have Cleanlist AI return the verified address directly.
What is an email permutator?
An email permutator is a generator, not a lookup. Give it a first name, a last name, and a company domain, and it combines those three inputs into every address format that companies commonly use, then hands you the list.
The conventions it covers are the ones that account for most B2B email in practice.
Full name patterns. jane.doe@, janedoe@, jane_doe@, jane-doe@.
Initial patterns. jdoe@, j.doe@, janed@, jane.d@.
Reversed patterns. doe.jane@, doej@, d.jane@.
Single name patterns. jane@, doe@.
It queries nothing and knows nothing about the company, which is what makes the output a candidate list rather than an answer: nothing in it tells you which of the permutations exists.
How do I find someone's email address from their name?
You need two inputs, their name and their employer's domain, and then either a prediction or a database.
Permute. Write out every likely format from the name and the domain, using the common conventions.
Narrow. Addresses the company has already published show which convention it uses, which cuts a list of twenty-plus candidates down to two or three worth testing.
Verify. Run the top candidate through the email verifier before you send it anything.
Or look it up. A contact database skips the whole chain and returns the verified address directly, at one credit each in Cleanlist AI, and every new workspace starts with 14 days of Pro (up to 3 seats, 250 credits).
If you only have a LinkedIn profile rather than a company domain, start at the LinkedIn email finder, which looks the person up from the profile URL.
Which permutation is the real email address?
The permutator cannot tell you, and neither can any tool that only generates. Finding the live one means testing the candidates against the mail server that actually holds the mailbox.
Two shortcuts make that testing far cheaper. First, find an address the company has already published, because most organizations use one convention across every employee, and identifying it collapses the candidate list to one. Second, check the domain has live MX records with the MX lookup, because if it does not, none of the permutations can work.
What you should not do is send to the whole list to see what sticks. Every non-existent address returns a hard bounce, and mailbox providers use your bounce rate to decide whether your mail goes to the inbox or to spam, for every recipient rather than only the bad ones. Cleanlist AI returns the single verified address instead, cross-checked across 25+ providers, with 98% verified work emails on our 500-lead benchmark.

How does this tool work?
An email permutator takes a person's name and their company domain and generates every common format combination at once. For "Jane Doe" and "acme.com" that means jane.doe@acme.com, jdoe@acme.com, jane@acme.com, doej@acme.com and roughly twenty more permutations.
Sales and recruiting teams use permutation for a specific moment: you know exactly who you want to reach and you do not have their address. You can build the same candidate set in a spreadsheet from the patterns on this page.
The catch is arithmetic. Usually one of those twenty-plus permutations is the deliverable address and the rest are not. Sending to all of them means bouncing off almost all of them, and bounce rate is the number that decides whether mailbox providers keep delivering your mail. A single bad blast can push an entire domain into spam folders for everyone on the list.
So permutation is step one of a two-step job. It produces candidates. Confirming which candidate is real means checking the address against live mail servers, which is what the email verifier does with an SMTP mailbox check and catch-all detection. Cleanlist AI skips both steps: it looks the person up across 25+ providers and returns the verified email at 1 credit, with 98% verified work emails on our 500-lead benchmark.
How email permutation works
Start with the name. First and last, exactly as the person writes it. Accents and hyphens are worth trying both ways, since companies normalize them inconsistently.
Find the domain. The part after the @ in the company's email, which is usually but not always the same as their website. Larger organizations often route mail through a different domain than the one their marketing site sits on.
Combine them. The standard conventions are full name with separators, first initial with last name, first name with last initial, reversed orders, and single-name forms.
List the results. A spreadsheet works well. Put the first name, last name and domain in their own columns and join them with a formula, such as =LOWER(A2&"."&B2&"@"&C2) for first.last@.
None of this tells you which address is real, and that's the part that protects your sending domain.
From candidates to one verified address
Permutation is the first step of a short chain, and each step after it removes guesses.
Check the domain. The MX lookup confirms the domain can receive mail at all. No MX records means no permutation will ever land.
Identify the convention. An address the company has already published shows which pattern it uses, which usually reduces the candidate set to one.
Verify the survivor. The email verifier checks the mailbox with an SMTP check and catch-all detection, free for 2 checks per IP every 30 days and half a credit per email inside Cleanlist AI.
Or skip the chain. Cleanlist AI matches the person across 25+ data providers and returns the verified email and phone number, at one credit per email and 10 per phone. Every new workspace starts with 14 days of Pro (up to 3 seats, 250 credits).
For a whole list of names rather than one person, the chain stops being practical and enrichment is the only sane route.

Frequently asked questions
Short answers about the Email Permutator: what it checks, what it costs and where it stops.
All free toolsWhat is an email permutator?
An email permutator generates every common email address format for a person from their name and company domain, turning one name and domain into jane.doe@, jdoe@, jane@ and 20 more variations. It is the starting point for reaching someone whose identity you know and whose address you do not.
How do I find out which permutation is the real email?
Permutations are candidates, and only a mail server can confirm one. To find the deliverable address, verify the candidates against the mail server. Narrow the field first with an address the company has already published, then run the survivor through the email verifier. Or skip the chain: Cleanlist AI People Search returns the single verified email, phone number, and LinkedIn URL for your target by cross-checking 25+ data providers, with 98% verified work emails on our 500-lead benchmark.
Can I generate permutations on this page?
No. This page explains the method, and you can build the list yourself in a spreadsheet. What an account gets you is the address itself: Cleanlist AI looks the person up across 25+ providers and returns the verified email, at 1 credit per verified email. Every new workspace starts with 14 days of Pro (up to 3 seats, 250 credits).
Why does sending to guessed emails hurt my deliverability?
Only one of the twenty-plus permutations is typically a real mailbox, so the rest bounce. Mailbox providers such as Google and Microsoft track your bounce rate, and once it crosses their threshold they start routing your mail to spam for every recipient rather than only the bad addresses. Recovering a burned sending domain takes weeks. This is why verifying a permutation before sending matters, and why Cleanlist AI verifies each address before you get it.
What if the company domain is different from their website?
Use the mail domain, not the marketing one. Larger organizations frequently send from a domain that is not the one their website sits on, and a permutation built on the wrong domain fails no matter which convention you pick. The quickest confirmation is an MX lookup on both: the domain with live mail servers is the one to permute against.
Can I permute a whole list of names at once?
Not here, and permuting in bulk is the wrong shape for the job anyway, since it multiplies one unverified list into twenty-plus. Inside Cleanlist AI a name and a company resolve to one verified email across 25+ data providers instead of a set of candidates, at 1 credit each. Every new workspace starts with 14 days of Pro (up to 3 seats, 250 credits), and paid plans start at $49 per seat a month.
