An AI BDR is software that does parts of a business development rep's job on its own: it finds and researches prospects, writes and sends outreach, answers inbound leads and books meetings. In 2026 the products split by direction. Outbound AI BDRs such as AiSDR (from $250 a month), Reply.io's Jason (from $500 a month), Artisan's Ava and 11x's Alice (no published price) prospect and email. Inbound agents such as Qualified's Piper and Salesforce Agentforce SDR ($2 a conversation) answer and book. HubSpot's Prospecting Agent costs $1 a lead. A US BDR averages $72,634 in base pay plus $10,000 in commission a year (Indeed). Prices read October 3, 2026.

Disclosure: Cleanlist AI publishes this page. Its own agents are described in a disclosed box after the tools table, and its plans are on the Cleanlist AI pricing page. Competitor prices come from each vendor's own page, with the date read.

What is an AI BDR?

An AI BDR (artificial intelligence business development representative) is an AI agent that runs top-of-funnel sales work: building lists of accounts and people that fit the ideal customer profile, researching each one, writing personalized outreach, sending it across email and sometimes LinkedIn or phone, handling replies, and booking meetings on a rep's calendar. Some AI BDRs work inbound instead, answering website visitors and new form fills within seconds.

The difference from a sequencer is who does the thinking. A sequencer sends the steps a person wrote to the list a person built. An AI BDR picks the people, writes the message per person from live data, and decides the next step from the reply. Most products sit somewhere between the two, with approval steps a person controls: Artisan describes "human-in-the-loop controls (approvals, tone and CTA locks, escalation rules)," and HubSpot's Prospecting Agent lets reps review each email or switch to a "fully autonomous mode."

Will AI replace BDRs?

Parts of the job, in 2026. In October 2026 the tasks with mature AI products are the ones that are research and writing at volume: building the list, finding verified contact data, researching the account, drafting the first touch, timing the follow-ups, and responding to inbound leads in seconds at any hour. The tasks that still sit with people are the live ones: a cold call that turns into discovery, handling an objection in real time, deciding which of three contacts at an account is the real buyer, and earning the trust that gets a second meeting.

So the BDR role is changing shape. A team that buys AI BDR software can run with fewer BDRs and point them at higher-value accounts, live calls and the replies the software surfaces. A founder with no BDR at all can use an AI BDR to run a first outbound motion before the first sales hire. The sections below split the job into its inbound and outbound tasks and name the AI that does each one today.

Inbound BDR jobs and the AI that does them

Inbound BDR work is speed and qualification: reach the lead while they still care, decide if they fit, and get them to the right seller.

Inbound jobAI that does it todayWhere a person stays
Respond to a form fill within minutesQualified Piper ("Engage inbound leads in the inbox"), Agentforce SDR, 11x Julian on the phoneCalling back the leads worth a live conversation
Talk to website visitorsQualified Piper ("Meet buyers in real time on the website"), Agentforce SDR ("Instant Website Engagement")Taking over high-value accounts mid-chat
Answer product and pricing questionsAgentforce SDR, grounded "in your trusted business data from your CRM"Questions with legal, security or custom-pricing weight
Qualify against the ICP11x Julian, ICP scoring toolsEdge cases the scoring model was not built for
Book the meetingQualified Piper ("Instantly schedule sales meetings"), Agentforce SDR ("real-time calendar availability")Rescheduling and no-shows on top accounts
Route to the right sellerCRM routing rules and agents on CRM triggersTerritory exceptions

Inbound is where AI BDRs are most complete today, because the lead has already raised a hand and the job is mostly fast, accurate answers.

Outbound BDR jobs and the AI that does them

Outbound BDR work is the long chain from "who to talk to" to "meeting booked." Each link has software that runs it, and the weakest link sets the result.

Outbound jobAI that does it todayWhere a person stays
Build the list of ICP accounts and peopleArtisan (a "database of 250M+ verified contacts"), Apollo, HubSpot Prospecting Agent (sources "the full buying committee")Defining the ICP and the exclusions
Find a verified email and phone numberWaterfall enrichment tools, Apollo's waterfall, ArtisanChecking bounce rates before the first send
Research each accountHubSpot Prospecting Agent ("monitors buying signals, scores accounts against your ideal customer profile"), AiSDR's "AI-researched contacts," Clay's ClaygentReading the research for the top 20 accounts
Write the first touchEvery AI BDR; HubSpot drafts "in each rep's voice"Approving copy for new segments
Send and follow upAiSDR (email and LinkedIn), Artisan (email "sent from your own domains in your reps' names"), 11x Alice (multi-channel), Reply.io JasonWatching deliverability
Handle repliesArtisan ("autonomous replies"), Reply.io Jason ("AI-generated responses"), Amplemarket Duo Inbox (draft replies)Any reply with a real question or objection
CallMostly people; Amplemarket Duo Voice sends AI voice messagesLive cold calls and discovery
Book the meetingArtisan (Ava handles "booking meetings")Preparing the AE for the meeting

The data links decide the outcome more than the writing link. An email written well to an address that bounces damages the sending domain for every other prospect, and a sequence to the wrong person at the right account books nothing.

Our product: Clu and Cleanlist AI agents

Cleanlist AI sells the outbound jobs above as agents a rep controls. Clu, Cleanlist AI's GTM agent, builds an agent from one sentence, such as: every week, find 500 new people who match my ICP, get their emails and phones, and add them to my sequence. It runs on a schedule. Each run searches 1B+ profiles for new ICP matches, finds verified emails and phone numbers across a 25+ provider waterfall, can score each lead against the ICP with the reasons written down, adds them to a sequence that sends from the rep's own inbox and LinkedIn account, and posts the run to Slack. The Research and Qualification skills write account briefs with a source on each line.

The rep stays on the parts people do best: replies land in the rep's inbox, call steps and agent-written call scripts land in the rep's queue, and every run stops at the credit limit you set. On Pro and Enterprise, agents also run on CRM triggers, enriching and scoring every new record the moment it lands in HubSpot or Salesforce. See how agents work.

What an AI BDR costs vs a BDR hire

Indeed reports an average US base salary of $72,634 for a business development representative, plus $10,000 a year in commission, from 15,500 salaries in job postings (updated September 28, 2026). That is about $82,600 a year, or $6,900 a month, before benefits, payroll taxes, the rep's tools, data and the manager's time.

PathCost a year at listWhat it covers
One US BDRAbout $82,600 in base and commission, before benefits, taxes and toolsEvery job above, including live calls and discovery
AiSDR Solo$3,000 monthly billing, $2,400 annual200 AI-researched contacts a month, email and LinkedIn
AiSDR Scale$30,000 monthly billing, $24,000 annual2,500 contacts a month, more channels
Reply.io JasonFrom $6,000Prospecting, messages and replies
HubSpot Prospecting Agent at 1,000 leads a month$12,000, plus Sales Hub seatsResearch and drafts in HubSpot
Amplemarket Startup$7,200 for 2 usersData, sequences and Duo
Salesforce Agentforce SDR$2 a conversation or $0.10 a standard action on Flex Credits, plus SalesforceInbound and outbound agent work in Salesforce

The two columns buy different work. Software at $2,400 to $30,000 a year covers the research and writing half of the job at a volume no person matches, and it does not take the discovery call. The setup that uses both: agents on the list, the research and the first touches, and fewer BDRs spending their hours on replies, calls and the top accounts.

AI BDR vs AI SDR

At companies that split the two roles, SDRs usually work inbound leads and BDRs prospect outbound; many companies use the titles interchangeably. The software market follows the second habit. "AI SDR" is the more common product label (US searchers type it about twice as often as "AI BDR," per Ahrefs in October 2026), and most products sold as AI SDRs (AiSDR, Jason, Ava, Alice) do the outbound BDR work in the table above. Inbound products tend to call themselves AI SDR agents too: Qualified calls Piper "the AI SDR Agent," and Salesforce calls its product Agentforce SDR.

The practical rule: ignore the label and check the direction. If your pipeline problem is "not enough first meetings from cold accounts," compare outbound tools. If it is "inbound leads wait too long," compare inbound agents. The AI SDR tools guide covers the outbound side tool by tool.

How BDR teams run agents alongside reps

Four ways to run agents next to reps, from least to most autonomous:

  1. Agent builds, rep sends. An agent builds and verifies the list and writes the research every week; reps write and send. Lowest risk, and the fastest way to measure what the data alone changes.
  2. Agent drafts, rep approves. The agent writes each first touch and the rep approves it, the default in HubSpot's Prospecting Agent and in Artisan's approval controls. LangChain describes running its own GTM agent this way, with a Slack draft "for the rep to approve."
  3. Agent runs the long tail. Agents work every account below a size or fit threshold end to end; reps own the top accounts by hand.
  4. Agent answers inbound around the clock. An inbound agent answers and books at any hour; reps take the meetings and the escalations.

Whatever the model, put three guardrails in place on day one: a credit or spend limit per run, a do-not-contact list the agent cannot override, and a weekly review of a sample of what the agent sent. The GTM agents guide covers guardrails, approvals and run costs in more depth, and the AI sales tools guide covers the wider set of AI tools a BDR uses.

How to choose an AI BDR

  • Inbound leads wait too long: Qualified Piper for website-led motions, Agentforce SDR if you run Salesforce, 11x Julian for the phone.
  • No BDR yet, need first meetings: AiSDR Solo at $250 a month to test, month to month.
  • Already on HubSpot: the Prospecting Agent at $1 a lead before adding a vendor.
  • Already sequencing in Reply.io: Jason, from $500 a month.
  • A managed outbound agent with a database inside: Artisan or 11x Alice, through a sales-led evaluation.
  • Agents that build and verify the list while reps own the conversation: see the agents in the disclosed box above and the plans on the Cleanlist AI pricing page.

FAQ

What is an AI BDR?

An AI BDR is AI software that does parts of a business development rep's job on its own: building lists of prospects that fit the ideal customer profile, researching them, writing and sending personalized outreach, handling replies and booking meetings. Inbound AI BDRs answer website visitors and new leads instead.

Will AI replace BDRs?

Not the whole role in 2026. AI now handles list building, contact data, account research, first drafts, follow-up timing and fast inbound responses. Live cold calls, discovery, objection handling and choosing the real buyer at an account still sit with people. A team that buys AI BDR software can run with fewer BDRs and point them at calls, replies and top accounts.

How much does an AI BDR cost?

Published AI BDR plans run from $250 a month (AiSDR Solo, 200 contacts a month) to $2,500 a month (AiSDR Scale). Reply.io's Jason starts at $500 a month, HubSpot's Prospecting Agent costs $1 per lead, and Salesforce Agentforce costs $2 a conversation or $500 per 100,000 Flex Credits. Artisan, 11x and Qualified publish no prices. Prices were read on October 3, 2026.

How much does a BDR cost compared with an AI BDR?

Indeed reports an average US BDR base salary of $72,634 plus $10,000 in commission a year (updated September 28, 2026), about $82,600 before benefits, taxes and tools. Published AI BDR plans run from $2,400 to $30,000 a year. The software covers research and writing at volume; live calls and discovery still need a person.

What is the difference between an AI BDR and an AI SDR?

Where companies split the roles, SDRs work inbound leads and BDRs prospect outbound, but most vendors use "AI SDR" for both. Check the direction: outbound tools (AiSDR, Jason, Ava, Alice) build lists and send outreach; inbound tools (Qualified Piper, Agentforce SDR) answer and book new leads.

Can an AI BDR make phone calls?

Some can. 11x sells Julian as an AI phone agent for inbound speed to lead, qualification and scheduling, and Salesforce prices Agentforce voice actions at 30 Flex Credits each. Amplemarket's Duo Voice sends AI voice messages. Most outbound cold calling is still done by people, with the software queuing the call and writing the script.
