Claude is good for sales work that runs on reading and writing: account research, call prep, follow-ups and outreach drafts. On its own it has no contact data, so it cannot hand you a verified work email or a direct dial. To prospect in Claude you connect two things: a data connector for people search and contact details (Apollo, ZoomInfo, Clay or Cleanlist, which we make) and a CRM connector to write the results back (HubSpot or Salesforce). Claude Pro costs $20 a month. Apollo, Clay and ZoomInfo each offer a free way in, Cleanlist starts at $79 a month, and people search is free on all four.

Checked October 1, 2026. Every connector fact below comes from the vendor's own docs or Anthropic's connector directory, read that day. Cleanlist publishes this page and sells one of the connectors, so read the Cleanlist parts as a vendor's description.

Is Claude good for sales reps?

Claude is good for the parts of a rep's day that are research and writing. Ask Claude to read a prospect's site, pricing page, job posts and recent news, and it returns a brief with sources. Paste a call transcript and it drafts the follow-up, the CRM notes and the next steps. Give it your ICP and three examples of emails that got replies, and it writes in that style. Anthropic's own sales tutorial pitches the same jobs: a brief before the call covering "the stakeholder map" and spend, and a debrief after it, with "the judgment about what to do with it" left to the rep.

Where Claude falls short is the list itself. Claude knows nothing about who works where today, and it has no way to check that a mailbox exists or that a number rings. If you ask for a contact anyway, a language model will produce a plausible first.last@company.com, which is a guess. That gap is why the setup below matters more than the prompts.

What can't Claude do for sales without connectors?

Claude without connectors cannot do four things a prospecting workflow needs:

  • Search for people. It has no database of titles, companies and locations to filter.
  • Return verified contact data. It cannot verify a work email or find a direct dial.
  • Save or export a list anywhere outside the chat.
  • Write to your CRM. It cannot create a contact, log an activity or move a deal stage.

Each gap closes with a connector. A connector is a remote MCP (Model Context Protocol) server that a vendor runs, and Claude calls its tools during the chat. Claude turns your plain sentence into the tool's filters, the vendor runs the search or the enrichment, and the vendor charges its normal credits. The rest of this page is which connectors to add, what each costs, and how to keep them from spending money you did not mean to spend. Our ChatGPT for lead generation guide covers the same gap from the ChatGPT side.

Which connectors does Claude have for sales?

Anthropic's connector directory listed 880 connectors on October 1, 2026, and HubSpot was the CRM on its front page. For prospecting, six matter: four data connectors and two CRMs. The table is built from each vendor's docs and Claude directory listing, read October 1, 2026.

How do you connect sales tools to Claude?

A directory connector takes about a minute. In Claude, open Customize, then Connectors, find HubSpot, Apollo, ZoomInfo or Clay, and sign in with that vendor's account over OAuth. On Team and Enterprise plans an owner adds the connector under Organization settings, then Connectors, and each member signs in with their own login. Anthropic's Sales plugin notes that Salesforce needs that organization-level step plus a Salesforce app set up for your org.

A custom connector is how you add a server that is not in the directory yet, and that includes Cleanlist today. Anthropic's steps: Customize, then Connectors, then "+ Add" and "Add custom connector", give it a name, paste the server URL (https://mcp.cleanlist.ai/v1/mcp for Cleanlist), and in the authentication settings choose to use your own OAuth client and paste the client ID Cleanlist gives you. Then sign in. Anthropic says custom connectors work on Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, and that "Free users are limited to one custom connector."

In Claude Code, add a remote server with claude mcp add --transport http <name> <url> and sign in with /mcp. Our Claude Code prospecting agent guide walks through that path with a CLAUDE.md file that holds your ICP.

What does a prospecting session in Claude look like?

A full session is five plain prompts. Here it is with Cleanlist and HubSpot connected, using Cleanlist's documented tool names. The same shape works with Apollo, ZoomInfo or Clay; the tool names and credit prices change, and the next section has those.

1. The ICP sentence.

Find heads of RevOps and sales operations at B2B software companies
in the US with 50 to 200 employees. Show me 50, with title, company
and location. Don't enrich anyone yet.

Claude turns the sentence into filters and calls search_people. On Cleanlist that costs 0 credits. Read the 50 rows. Drop the ones that are wrong before anything costs money.

2. Price the job.

Keep the 40 I didn't strike out. What would it cost to get a verified
work email for each, and what would it cost with direct dials too?

Claude calls estimate_cost, which returns the price, your balance and a signed quote that expires after five minutes. For 40 people that is up to 40 credits for emails and up to 440 with direct dials.

3. Verify emails and direct dials.

Go ahead with emails for all 40, and direct dials for the 15 at
companies under 100 employees.

Claude calls enrich_person or enrich_list. Cleanlist runs each row through its waterfall and charges 1 credit per verified work email and 10 per direct dial. A row where nothing comes back costs nothing.

4. Save the list.

Save these 40 to a list called "RevOps US 50-200, Oct 2026".

Claude calls create_list and add_leads_to_list, both free on Cleanlist. The list is now in your Cleanlist workspace for export.

5. Push to the CRM.

Create HubSpot contacts for everyone with a verified email, linked to
their company, with lead source "Cleanlist, October 2026". Skip anyone
already in HubSpot.

This step runs through the HubSpot connector, which reads your CRM to check for duplicates and writes the new contacts. On Pro and Scale, Cleanlist's own two-way HubSpot and Salesforce sync can do the same job from the Cleanlist app.

What does each step cost on each tool?

Search is free on all four data connectors. The money is in enrichment, and the four price it differently. Rates below are each vendor's own published figures.

  • People search: free on Apollo (company search uses credits), ZoomInfo, Clay and Cleanlist.
  • Work email: Apollo charges 1 credit per email reveal at app rates. ZoomInfo charges 1 data credit per newly enriched record, up to 10 records a call. Clay says a typical interaction uses 20 to 100 credits, depending on which enrichments run. Cleanlist charges 1 credit per verified work email.
  • Direct dial: Apollo charges 8 credits per phone number. ZoomInfo's record credit covers email and phone. Clay's cost depends on the providers its waterfall reaches. Cleanlist charges 10 credits per direct dial.
  • Saving a list: free on Cleanlist; Apollo contacts and lists are free to manage; ZoomInfo audiences cost 1 data credit per new record loaded; Clay lists go through Functions.
  • CRM write: included in your HubSpot or Salesforce subscription.

On Cleanlist, the five-step session above costs at most 190 credits: 40 emails plus 15 direct dials at 10 each. Starter's 1,500 credits cost $79, about 5.3 cents a credit, so the session is at most about $10, and less when rows miss. Apollo's credit ladder is from its pricing page as captured August 7 and September 1, 2026; the other rates were read October 1, 2026.

What does prospecting in Claude cost per month?

Prospecting in Claude costs a Claude plan plus a data plan. Claude Pro is $20 a month, or $17 billed annually, and includes connectors, Cowork and Claude Code. Claude Team's Standard seat is $20 to $25 a month, depending on billing. On the data side: Apollo's MCP costs nothing extra on any Apollo plan, with paid plans from $49 a user a month on annual billing. Clay's free plan works with its MCP, and Launch is $185 a month. ZoomInfo gives 1,000 data credits once, then needs a contract with no published price (Vendr reports a median of $33,500 a year). Cleanlist's MCP starts on Starter at $79 a month with 1,500 credits, Pro is $229 with 5,000 and Scale $599 with 15,000, 25% off annual, on Cleanlist's pricing page. A solo founder on Claude Pro plus Cleanlist Starter pays $99 a month before any CRM.

Which MCP connectors support waterfall enrichment across several data providers?

Two of the data connectors in the table run a waterfall behind the MCP. Cleanlist sends every enrich_person and enrich_list call through 25+ data providers in sequence and stops at the first verified hit, so Claude makes one call and the provider order is handled for you. Clay's MCP enriches through Clay's own waterfall: its MCP page says 200+ providers and its June 2026 guide says 150+, and which providers run depends on the enrichments and Functions your team set up. Apollo and ZoomInfo enrich from their own single databases. A waterfall matters most for direct dials, where one database's coverage varies a lot by segment. Our waterfall enrichment tools comparison covers the same question outside MCP.

Which Claude connectors return mobile numbers and direct dials?

Apollo, ZoomInfo, Clay and Cleanlist all return phone numbers through their connectors. Apollo's Claude listing says it enriches with "verified emails, direct dials", at 8 credits a phone number. ZoomInfo's listing names "verified work emails, direct dials" among 300+ data points, at 1 data credit per record. Clay's MCP page says it returns emails and phone numbers through its provider waterfall. Cleanlist's enrich_person returns a verified work email, a direct dial or both, at 1, 10 or 11 credits; on our own 500-lead benchmark the waterfall returned 98% verified work email and 85% direct dial. If phones are the requirement, run 50 of your own records through two of these and compare.

Which data connector works best with HubSpot?

The most reliable HubSpot setup in Claude is two connectors: a data connector that finds and verifies the contact, and HubSpot's own connector that writes it. HubSpot's connector can search and update contacts, companies, deals and tickets, and Claude's listing shows 36 tools. Apollo writes contacts into Apollo, which you then sync to HubSpot. ZoomInfo's MCP does not write to your CRM at all. Clay pushes to CRMs through Functions your ops team builds. Cleanlist's MCP writes lead lists, and Cleanlist's two-way HubSpot, Salesforce and Pipedrive sync runs in the Cleanlist app on Pro and Scale. For automatic field updates without an ops team, Cleanlist Pro plus HubSpot's connector is the simplest pairing; with an ops team, Clay Functions give more control.

What are the best Claude skills for sales?

The best place to start is Anthropic's own Sales plugin, which went from 9 to 36 skills in version 2.0 and runs in Cowork and Claude Code. The skills worth installing first:

  • account-research: overview, recent news, likely priorities and fit against your ICP.
  • call-prep: attendees, account history, prior calls and discovery questions.
  • call-summary: a transcript becomes a follow-up draft, a team summary and proposed CRM updates.
  • draft-outreach: a personalized email or multi-touch sequence.
  • lead-triage: score an inbound lead or rank a backlog against your ICP.
  • stakeholder-map: roles, influence and who is missing in a deal.

The plugin's connector map lists Clay, ZoomInfo and Apollo under data enrichment and HubSpot, Salesforce, Close and Monday under CRM, and each skill works with whatever connector fills that category. In Claude Code it installs with claude plugin marketplace add anthropics/knowledge-work-plugins and then claude plugin install sales@knowledge-work-plugins. Write one skill of your own too: your ICP, your exclusions, and a rule that enrichment waits for your yes.

How do you keep Claude from spending credits or touching data you didn't approve?

Set four guardrails before you connect a funded account.

Approvals. Claude lets you set each connector tool to "Always allow", "Needs approval" or "Blocked". Leave search on Always allow and set every enrichment and write tool to Needs approval, so Claude stops and asks before it spends credits or creates CRM records. Anthropic notes that a write still needs the underlying permission in the source system.

Credit limits. Clay lets admins set a monthly credit budget per rep and hard-block at the cap. Cleanlist makes every paid call carry a signed quote from estimate_cost, valid for five minutes, and rejects a job priced above it; your balance is the ceiling, shared across the app, the API and MCP. ZoomInfo admins enable MCP per user. Our guide to spend control for agents on B2B data goes deeper.

Model training. On Claude Free, Pro and Max, Anthropic uses your chats to improve Claude only if you allow it in your privacy settings, so check that setting before you paste customer data. Claude's pricing page says Team and Enterprise have no model training by default. Apollo goes further: it "prohibits AI model training with Apollo MCP integrations" and asks you to confirm training is off before you connect.

Privacy and trust. Anthropic's advice is to "only connect Claude to servers built and hosted by organizations and applications you trust", because a malicious server can carry hidden instructions. Contact data you enrich is personal data: under GDPR you owe EU contacts a notice by the first message, and US cold email falls under CAN-SPAM. Keep a record of where each row came from and when.

Is ChatGPT or Claude better for sales?

For research and writing, Claude and ChatGPT are close enough that preference decides. The differences are in connecting sales tools. Apollo, ZoomInfo, Clay and HubSpot all publish connectors for both. Claude adds custom connectors on every plan, including one on Free, and Anthropic ships a dedicated Sales plugin with 36 skills plus the Claudeforce partnership with Salesforce. ChatGPT adds custom MCP servers through developer mode, which OpenAI's docs say is available to Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise and Education accounts on the web, with write actions asking for confirmation by default. If your team already lives in ChatGPT, use the directory apps there. If you are choosing fresh for sales work today, Claude has the deeper sales tooling. Cleanlist documents and supports Claude and Claude Code, and publishes no ChatGPT setup guide yet.

Which AI tool is best for salespeople?

The best AI tool for a salesperson depends on which job it does, because no single tool does all five well today:

  • Research, writing and call prep: Claude or ChatGPT, with Anthropic's Sales plugin if you choose Claude.
  • Search and send in one vendor: Apollo, whose connector can enrich a contact and add it to a sequence from the chat.
  • Enterprise account research, intent and signals: ZoomInfo, if you already have the contract.
  • RevOps-governed workflows: Clay, where an ops team builds Functions and sets per-rep budgets.
  • Verified emails and direct dials paid per result: Cleanlist.
  • System of record: your CRM's own connector, HubSpot or Salesforce.

Where does Cleanlist fit in a Claude sales setup?

Cleanlist publishes this page, so treat this as a disclosed vendor entry. Cleanlist is the data connector for teams whose bottleneck is the list: verified work emails and direct dials on the same row. People and company search are free. Enrichment runs a waterfall across 25+ data providers in sequence and charges 1 credit per verified work email and 10 per direct dial, and a lookup that finds nothing costs nothing. Our own 500-lead benchmark measured 98% verified work email and 85% direct dial. The MCP server's 30+ tools include search_people, search_companies, estimate_cost, enrich_person, enrich_list, create_list and add_leads_to_list.

Three limits to know before you pick it. MCP is included from Starter at $79 a month; the 14-day trial and the Free plan do not include it. Cleanlist is not in Claude's directory yet, so you add it as a custom connector and paste the OAuth client ID Cleanlist gives you. And Cleanlist has no built-in sequencer today, so sending happens in your own tool. Setup detail is on the Cleanlist MCP server page.

Frequently asked questions

Can Claude find email addresses?

Not on its own. Claude has no contact database, so an address it writes without a connector is a pattern guess. Connect a data connector such as Apollo, ZoomInfo, Clay or Cleanlist, and Claude can call that vendor's enrichment, which returns a verified address from the vendor's data.

Do I need Claude Pro to use connectors for sales?

No. Anthropic says connectors work on every plan, and Free accounts can add one custom connector. Cowork and Claude Code, where Anthropic's Sales plugin runs, start on Pro at $20 a month.

Can Claude update my CRM?

Yes, with your CRM's connector. HubSpot's connector creates and updates contacts, companies and deals. Salesforce's hosted MCP servers act within each user's existing Salesforce permissions.

Is Cleanlist in Claude's connector directory?

Not yet. As of October 1, 2026 you add Cleanlist in Claude as a custom connector at https://mcp.cleanlist.ai/v1/mcp and paste the OAuth client ID Cleanlist gives you. MCP needs a paid Cleanlist plan from Starter.
